Hello! Finally, after a huge break (well, hiatus really, have not played live since 2004) I am finally back at auditioning for a position in a band as a drummer. I cannot wait until I find that one band that lets me express myself in my music. I miss the stage, I miss the fans, I miss the fun, I miss the music. I have worked hard these past 4 years or so (after moving back home to Georgia) on my drum chops, different techniques, teaching, experimenting, and all around playing to get my sound bet…

I've been thinking about this for some time and wanted to write about it for clarity (mine and yours).
Gospel or church drumming is the new "hot" gig these days. Companies like Vic Firth have really noticed and supported this vein of drummers even to the point of having a video series dedicated to these gifted players.
I play for my church (and others at times) and have been on and off since I was 15. Does this make me a "Gospel" drummer? It says in the good book that without love we are like…

Most tunes were recorded using close micing on the bass and snare drums, with 2 overheads, typically Shure SM 81s, about 6’ off the floor and 2-4 ‘ in front of the kit. The kits varied with project and the room.

This is an interview I did with Sean from The Black Page Magazine.
BP: Chris your resume is impressive to say the least. How does a player at your level stay working amongst such a stacked pool of talent in a place like New York?
Chris: Well I think that there is enough work for all of us. I've had the conversation a few times about the life of a musician being similar to a Buddhist Monk's when it comes to a career in music. I guess if you really want to be a life long career drummer/musician…

Greetings, MD bloggers! My name is Chris DeRosa, and at the invitation of Modern Drummer, I wanted to say hello.
I've been playing drums for a living since I was fifteen. I love drumming and have since I was about eleven years old. I remember being mesmerized by the ECM sounds coming out of my radio tuned into WPKN from Bridgeport, Connecticut. I knew at that young age that I would be a career musician.
The path music has taken…

Pocket is a repeated, great feeling, pattern, or groove. Keeping it in the pocket means holding the groove and deviating subtly or rarely and never without a reason.
Why is it important?
- It’s the root of any groove-based music. Keeping a pocket is endemic to music of the African Diaspora --- which is what the drum set is used in. If you check out West African music, many people play specific, undeviating parts to produce a burning, poly-rhythmic whole, over which one person solos at a time.…

Why not both?
When I was younger I focused on becoming a great drummer. I learned how to play many idioms, and many ways to get fired from any gig in less than 5 minutes. These are nice things to know, if one is over-employed.
Doing something because one can does not mean one should. The purpose of a musical instrument is not to amaze people, but make music. Playing an instrument at a high level is not necessarily the same as playing the music at a high level. There's nothing wrong with push…

Hey folks,
Had a small dilemma i have faced on occasion and i'm wondering if anyone else (hopefully not!) has experienced the same thing.
In the more recent few years, i've noticed myself having a bit of an "unbalanced" feeling on the throne occasionally especially when doing patterns or work using both feet .(such as hi hat work or double bass riffs). the end result to sum it up best, is feeling like i'm leaning toward my kick drum foot and my center of balance is somewhat lost for a moment.…

It was sad news this weekend to hear of passing of legendary funk/rock drummer Buddy Miles, who died in Texas at the age of 60 after suffering from congestive heart failure. A versatile songwriter, vocalist, and collaborator, he was probably most famous his brief stint with Jimi Hendrix in the Band of Gypsys. and his fuzzed-out hit “Them Changes” (a favorite on the set list with the Stiff Joints).
Miles started playing drums in his hometown of Omaha, Nebraska, when he was nine years-old. His mu…

What is Blast Off?
* Blast Off is the first drum competition of it's kind! It's a drumming competition for metal drummers, judged by metal drummers. We don't see anything wrong with other drum competitions, we just figured it was time to do something different. Another opportunity to expand the significance of this drumming style, further promote metal drumming and to recognize those who pursue it. That's pretty much what we do...
When is it?
* The event will take place on March…
