Hey there, I am a session drummer and an educator here in New York City. In my formative years, I have studied at Musicians Institute of Technology, the prestigious Berklee College of Music, and privately with Joe Franco, Casey Scheuerell and Garey Williams in Seattle. Since moving to the Big Apple in ‘95, I have performed at NYC’s best rock/pop venues, including: Webster Hall, China Club, Cutting Room, Mercury Lounge, CBGB’s, Pianos, The Bitter End, Brownies, Baby Jupiter, Continental, just to name a few, with established artists in rock, pop, funk, alternative, R&B/hip hop, folk, fusion, country, blues and heavy metal. My major drumming influences include Greg Bissonette, Rod Morgenstein and Steve Gadd, all of them known for their drumming versatility. I am also a visiting faculty member at Ischool of Music and Arts in LI, and also teach drums privately at my home studio in Midtown.

The beautiful thing about cats like Gadd is that they're people also, and they normally don't have a problem talkin' to anyone. That's a kodak moment you gettin' to rap with him in Central Park, but it's great thing to know that Gadd and so many of the greats are people just like us, and we share the same thing they do, a real love for music and what they do. They've been doin' it much longer than we have, and they're great craftsmen, which is why we yearn to learn from them. They have a lot to share with us and world.
Oh, I love Casey Scheuerell, Joe Franco, Greg Bissonette, and Steve Gadd. My first percussion instructor in junior college in the early 80's was Dick Ecton, the tympanist for the DC Army Concert Band, who worked with Gadd when Gadd was with The Army Blues Band, and Ecton was into Steve Gadd big time. As a matter of fact, 20 years ago, when I was in the Univ. of DC Big Band, we recorded at a studio in Rockville, Md where Gadd had recorded the night before on a Yamaha Custom Recording rig. The engineers were surprised that I knew Gadd was there just from knowing how the drums were tuned and sounded. It was an honor and privilege for me to sit and record on a rig that The Steve Gadd did the night before.
Hey Kenji. I'm very grateful and honored for gettin' the opportunity to play and record with some those cats. We never know who we're gonna run into when we take this journey. For instance, I would've never thought I'd be in the same place, let alone a studio with Roy Clark and Stan Lynch doin' a rock/country/blues/gospel project together, or on a stage with Kenny Drew, Jr., and witnessing the genius of one of the greatest jazz pianists in the industry. And the company of musicans that they keep is astounding to me, so I'm just thankful that I've been allowed to what little I do, and I don't take it for granted.

You might know John Depatie (guitar) or Toshi Someya (bass). I can't remember exactly when they were at MI, but I think it was around that time.
Keep me posted,
Jonathan
