Raised in a West Indian home then a private boarding school in NYC that happened to be one of the top five male choirs in the world music my World was lyrical. The combination of various West Indian patioses with subtle city rhythms, like the 'El' and tires on asphalt and some Handel's Messiah or Gregorian mode wove unique roots. Add that to seeing Rashaan, having Gil Scott in conversation, the '60s I was blessed. The military altered the path, but the creativity branched out and became more visual. The Natural composition in stained anatomical slides triggered a bloom ... Art and Design appeared. Since the '80s I've apprenticed to several Masters in developing as a Conceptual Artist creating every thing from jewelry to furniture to fashion and in all of the visual disciplines.
Moving to the Bay shifted me back into singing, but also percussion. Until then I'd forgotten about being too small to play conga so they gave me a stick and 'Cerveza Rhinegold' to keep the beat with. The 3rd Avenue El was the coolest with the clink of those chains, rattle of the rails and squealing of metal on turns.
It was getting on stage with Marcia MIget's band and being involved in her music school that really motivated me. ... and when I ran into my voice teacher who I hadn't seen since 6th grade who was living in the same neighborhood ... okay so we could say all the New Age-y things like "' ... serendipitous ... '", but ultimately the phrase is 'I'm listening.'
I say all that to set this stage ... when 'My Zounds' comes out it's going to be an interesting blend of form and structure, South American rhythms, vocalizations and poetics played on a number instruments with definitely a funky bottom.
So with my 'iKon' (altered ego) Qyot'I is SU, the instrument designed by Joe Agu of AfroRhythms Exotic Percussion.
Awight this was inspired by Poogie.
Lots more to say, more to hear, check out us out at WeBikons.
A stereo udu designed by Joe Agu of AfroRhythms Exotic Percussion in the South Bay, along with a pair of brass Titons, though the real question is 'what are your favorite toys'?
