My love of music was jump-started when I was 4 years old by my Mother, who introduced me to Michael Jackson. I knew so little about music; I don’t remember even questioning how the records came to be, although I do remember trying to moonwalk. I think I nearly had it nailed by the time I became less interested in Michael and more in Ndugu Chancler and Jeff Porcaro. Then Simon Phillips. Then Steve Smith, Steve Gadd, Buddy Rich, Freddy Gruber, Dave Weckl, Vinnie Colaiuta, Keith Carlock, Dennis Chambers, Bernard Purdie…
Studying these influences and many more after I took up the drums came to be my greatest source of learning and inspiration - their technique, the music they’ve played, their attitudes – all different but with a common passion. Slowly digesting each style, learning to apply it to different genres, melting it all down and starting to craft my own approach has been the most interesting, worthwhile and fulfilling experience of my life.
Over my seven-year professional career I’ve set up in venues from pubs, clubs and function rooms to school libraries, fireworks displays, boats, gardens and rugby stadiums. And I’ve loved every minute of it.
I’m also a busy tutor, teaching thirty students each week in schools and at private tuition facilities. While my passion lies in performance, there is a great sense of satisfaction in seeing young musicians develop.
