that is a tough one. philly joe jones and poogie bell those cats are comitted to the groove. weckl and harvey mason i just dig the stuff they do. alex acuna wow that is all i can say. chris ( daddy ) dave and stokley bring in the church to the show max, dennis, billy , vennie, elvin, tony, gary chester, jack d, to many to just stop at ten
Daniel Brian Comment by Daniel Brian on August 2, 2008 at 9:05am
Wow.. that's tough. Here goes (in no particular order)

Jojo Mayer, Jeff Porcaro, Bernard, Steve Gadd, Dave Weckl, Poogie, Chris Dave, Keith Carlock, Billy and of course Buddy.
I'm into a lot of the older cats and have massive respect for them all, but with such limited footage available unless you take a trip to Berklee library or somewhere similar it's difficult to be so inspired by them as a pose to the guys listed above, who are all over the 'net in varying degrees; I wish I was around when the older guys were still alive and gigging.
Generally speaking I think we're all embodiments of our influences, so as much as Poogie- you list Elvin, Max, Tony and Art in your influences- I can hear how those guys have inspired your playing and therefore it's all passed on.
If anyone knows how to get any particularly good footage of our ancestors please let me know.

As a Band Leader/Producer/Horn Player..There are a few drummers that "Command The Throne" By that I mean their time is rock solid, rarely waver in tempo, know the nuances of being a drummer behind a named artist. Kudos to:
1-Poogie Bell---Chaka Kahn Band exceptional control of all songs
2-Damon Mendez- Like wise funk/R&B pocket
3-Abe Fogel- Hip Hop/R&B/Rock solid knows how to break it down
4-J.T. Lewis "The Lefty" Funk,Jazz,R&B, Reliable Always
5-Tony Lewis- What can I say if he hears it he plays it...and well
6-Wally "Gator" Watson--- Big Band,R&B
7-Tobias Ralph-- WoW strong player
8-Larry Bright- Billy C disciple and a Bad cat from DC
9-Russ Worrell-Pocket and can really sing
These are just a short list of the cats that I have worked with who have made my job as a leader, or player most of all fun,and have made many a "Star" sound good.

Be Blessed

Hmmmmmm
Max Roach, Philly Joe Jones,Charlie Persip, Brother Billy,Tony Williams,Steve Gadd,Dennis Chambers,Sun Ship,Dennis Davis,Lenny White,Alphonse Mouzon, More than 10 I know but who's counting.
Theo Brown Comment by Theo Brown on April 12, 2008 at 1:20pm
Where was I, Art Blakey raw, primal emotion combined with constant driving pulse and rhythmic creativity,Philly Jo oh the finesse,Lenny White just his tuning alone was enough,Yogi horton because his pocket was just deep and he do it all,Dave Garibaldi syncopation and funk,Gaylord Birch diversity and funkiness,Dennis Chambers a natural who can authentically play it all from jazz to rock honestly and effortlessly.
Theo Brown Comment by Theo Brown on April 12, 2008 at 1:08pm
It all started with Buddy Rich really and I've always been drawn to technique I think because of that being youg and impressionable at the time then Billy Cobham due to the same reason but also the emotion and musicanship was going to another gear then Tony Williams due to musicianship, the other wordly possibilities and thinking outside the box,Jack deJohnette because he had something completely different going on that wasn't just tied to drums. To be continued....
